You are not doing anything wrong

If you plan your outfits around what hides sweat marks, keep a spare top in your bag, avoid raising your arms, or dread handshakes and meetings — you are describing hyperhidrosis. It affects an estimated one in twenty people, and it has nothing to do with hygiene, fitness or nerves.

It is also one of the most rewarding conditions we treat at Lumina Aesthetics. Patients often tell us afterwards that they hadn't realised how much daily energy they were spending managing it.

What is hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is sweating well beyond what the body needs to control its temperature. It happens regardless of heat, exercise or stress, and it most often affects:

Because it's a recognised medical condition, it deserves a medical assessment — which is exactly how treatment begins here.

How the treatment works

Tiny amounts of a prescription medicine are injected just beneath the skin across the affected area. This temporarily interrupts the nerve signals that tell the sweat glands to switch on, so those glands produce dramatically less sweat.

Importantly, only the treated area is affected. The rest of your body continues to regulate temperature completely normally.

What to expect: an underarm treatment takes roughly 20–30 minutes. The needles are very fine and superficial — most patients describe brief pinpricks. There's no downtime, and you can go straight back to your day.

How long do results last?

Most patients notice a clear reduction in sweating within one to two weeks. Results typically last six to eight months — often longer than facial anti-wrinkle treatment, because the treated muscles aren't in constant motion.

Many of our patients plan one treatment in late spring ahead of summer, and another before the party season or a significant event. If you're treating for a wedding, presentation or holiday, we'd suggest booking two to three weeks beforehand so the effect is fully settled.

Why doctor-led matters here

Excessive sweating can occasionally be a sign of an underlying medical issue — thyroid conditions, certain medications, hormonal changes. A consultation with a practising medical doctor means that's properly considered before treatment, rather than overlooked.

It also means the assessment is genuinely honest. If treatment isn't appropriate for you, or if something else should be investigated first, we'll say so. That's the same principle we apply to every treatment at Lumina.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same medicine used for wrinkles?

Yes — it's the same prescription-only botulinum toxin, used in a different way and in a different area. Because it's a prescription medicine in Ireland, treatment always follows a consultation and assessment by our doctor.

Will I stop sweating everywhere?

No. Only the small treated area is affected. Your body carries on regulating its temperature normally everywhere else, which is why this treatment is well tolerated.

How long until I notice a difference?

Usually within one to two weeks, with the full effect settling by around two weeks. Results then typically last six to eight months.

Does it hurt?

The injections are fine and shallow. Most patients describe brief pinpricks rather than pain, and the appointment is usually over in under half an hour.

Can I treat my hands or face rather than underarms?

Yes — palms, soles, face and scalp can all be treated, though sensitivity and dosing differ by area. We'll talk through what's appropriate for you at consultation.

Is it discreet?

Completely. Lumina is a private clinic, not a busy salon floor, and appointments are one-to-one with the doctor. Many patients tell us privacy was a deciding factor in coming to us.

Do you treat patients in Kerry?

Yes. As well as our main clinic in Pallaskenry, Co. Limerick, we run a doctor-led clinic every two weeks at Urban Angels Hair Salon, Moyvane, Co. Kerry (V31 PN47), serving Listowel, Abbeyfeale, Tarbert and Ballybunion.
