Teeth Grinding & Jaw Clenching Treatment

If you wake with a sore jaw, headaches or worn teeth, you're not imagining it. Masseter treatment eases the clenching — and softens the jawline as a welcome side effect.

A medical problem with a cosmetic bonus

Bruxism — grinding or clenching your teeth, usually at night — is more common than most people realise. It wears down enamel, causes morning headaches and jaw ache, and often goes untreated because people assume nothing can be done short of a mouthguard.

This is one of the treatments patients are most surprised by. It's genuinely medical: it relieves pain and protects your teeth. The slimmer, softer jawline that follows is a secondary benefit, not the point.

How it works

The masseter is the thick, powerful muscle you can feel bulge at the angle of your jaw when you bite down. In people who clench, it's overworked and often enlarged.

A small amount of prescription medicine is injected into the muscle on each side, reducing how forcefully it can contract. You continue to chew, speak and eat completely normally — what changes is the involuntary, excessive clenching.

Results last 6–8 months — noticeably longer than facial anti-wrinkle treatment, because the masseter is a large, strong muscle. Relief from clenching usually begins within one to two weeks.

Who it helps

Will it change my face?

Gradually, and usually in a way patients like. As the overworked muscle softens, the lower face becomes slimmer and the jawline more defined. It happens over weeks rather than overnight, so it never looks abrupt.

If facial slimming is not something you want, say so at consultation — dosing can be adjusted to prioritise symptom relief.

Honest assessment first

Not all jaw pain is bruxism. Some is dental, some is TMJ joint related, and occasionally it points to something else entirely. Because Lumina is doctor-led, that's properly considered before treatment rather than assumed — and if you'd be better served by your dentist first, we'll tell you.

Frequently asked questions

Can Botox really help teeth grinding?

Yes. Relaxing the masseter reduces the force of clenching, which eases jaw ache, headaches and further wear on your teeth. It's a well-established use of the medicine.

Will I still be able to chew?

Completely. The treatment reduces excessive clenching force, not normal function. Dosing is assessed individually so eating and speaking are unaffected.

How long does it last?

Typically 6–8 months, longer than facial anti-wrinkle treatment. Relief usually starts within one to two weeks.

Do I still need my mouthguard?

Often the two work well together. Your dentist's guidance takes priority on dental protection — we'd never advise stopping something they've recommended.

How much is it?

€390, including a free consultation with the doctor beforehand.

Do you treat patients in Kerry?

Yes — at our fortnightly clinic at Urban Angels Hair Salon, Moyvane, Co. Kerry (V31 PN47), serving Listowel, Abbeyfeale, Tarbert and Ballybunion.
