What to expect

Every lip filler journey at our Limerick clinic begins with a consultation: your goals, your anatomy, your medical history, and a frank conversation about what will suit you. Treatment itself typically takes around 30 minutes, with numbing cream to keep you comfortable. Some swelling for a few days afterwards is completely normal — your true result settles in over one to two weeks, and results generally last 6–12 months.

Why doctor-led matters for lips

The lips and surrounding area contain important blood vessels, and safe filler treatment depends on a detailed knowledge of that anatomy. At Lumina, treatment is planned and performed by a practising medical doctor — trained to place filler safely, to recognise and manage complications, and above all to exercise the judgement that keeps results subtle. It's a medical procedure, and we treat it like one.

What lip filler actually is

Lip filler is hyaluronic acid — a sugar molecule your body already produces and already holds in your skin, where it binds water and keeps tissue plump. The gel used in the clinic is a stabilised, medical-grade version of that same molecule. It is placed in small, measured amounts into specific layers of the lip to restore shape, definition and hydration.

Two things follow from that. First, it is temporary — your body gradually breaks it down, which is a feature, not a flaw: nothing about your face is permanently committed. Second, hyaluronic acid filler is reversible. An enzyme called hyaluronidase dissolves it. Any doctor placing filler should hold hyaluronidase on site and know how to use it in an emergency. We do.

What “natural lip filler” actually means

“Natural” is the most overused word in aesthetics, so here is what it means in practice at Lumina:

• We work with your lip, not against it. Every mouth has a shape — a philtrum, a cupid's bow, a vermilion border, a particular upper-to-lower ratio. Treatment respects that architecture rather than imposing a template.
• Volume is often not the answer. A great many people who ask for “bigger lips” actually want more definition, a lifted corner, or hydration in a lip that has become flat and lined. Those are different treatments.
• We build gradually. Starting with 0.5ml and reviewing is almost always better than starting with 1ml and regretting it. You cannot un-see an overfilled lip in the mirror; you can always add.
• Balance beats size. Lips that suit a face read as attractive. Lips that outsize a face read as treated. The difference is proportion, not product.

The options — and which one suits you

• Lip augmentation (€280) — the standard treatment. Hyaluronic acid filler for shape, structure and volume. Suits thin, flat or asymmetric lips, and lips that have lost definition with age.
• Lip hydration / skin boosting — a softer, more fluid product placed to rehydrate rather than to build. Suits lips that look dry, crepey or lined but are not short of volume. Very little visual change in size.
• Lip flip (€140) — not filler at all. A few units of anti-wrinkle product relax the muscle around the mouth so the upper lip rolls slightly outward, showing more pink. Subtle, lasts 8–12 weeks, adds no volume. A genuinely good entry point if you want more upper lip but do not want filler. See our anti-wrinkle injections page.
• Gummy smile treatment (€140) — for a smile that shows a lot of upper gum. Relaxes the muscle that pulls the lip up rather than filling the lip.
• Nothing — a real option, and one we recommend more often than you would expect. If your lips suit your face and you have come in because of a photograph or a comment, we will say so.

Your appointment, step by step

1. Consultation. We talk about what is bothering you, look at your lips at rest and moving, discuss your medical history and any previous filler, and agree what — if anything — is worth doing. This is free with treatment.
2. Photographs. Taken before we start, for your record. They stay confidential unless you give separate written consent for anything else.
3. Numbing. Topical anaesthetic cream sits on the lips for around 20 minutes. The fillers we use also contain lidocaine, so the area becomes progressively more comfortable as treatment goes on.
4. Treatment. Ten to twenty minutes. Small amounts of product placed with a needle or cannula depending on the area and the goal, with regular pauses so you can look in the mirror.
5. Massage and review. We shape the product, check symmetry with your lips at rest and smiling, and give you written aftercare.
6. Two-week review. Swelling has settled by then and the result is the real result. If anything needs a small adjustment, this is when we do it.

Swelling, bruising and the first 48 hours

This is the part that surprises first-timers, so we are direct about it. Lips are vascular and mobile, and they swell more than any other area we treat.

• Day 0–1: significant swelling. Your lips will look bigger than the final result — often noticeably so. This is normal and is not what you have paid for.
• Day 2–3: peak swelling passes. You may have some bruising, most often at injection points near the corners.
• Day 4–7: most swelling gone. Lips may still feel slightly firm or lumpy to the touch — this settles.
• Week 2: the true result. Judge your lips now, not on day one.

Practical advice: do not book lip filler in the week before a wedding, a big event, or holiday photographs. Two to three weeks of clearance is sensible.

Aftercare that actually matters

• Sleep slightly propped up for the first night or two — it reduces morning swelling.
• A cool compress (not ice directly on the skin) helps in the first 24 hours.
• No strenuous exercise, saunas, steam rooms or hot yoga for 24–48 hours.
• Avoid alcohol for 24 hours — it increases bruising and swelling.
• No lip products, tinting, waxing or facials for a week; no dental work for two weeks if you can avoid it.
• Keep the area clean and avoid makeup on the lips for the first 12 hours to reduce infection risk.
• Drink water. Hyaluronic acid draws water in — dehydration works against your result.

Risks, honestly

Lip filler is a medical procedure, not a beauty treatment, and it deserves an honest risk conversation. Common and expected: swelling, bruising, tenderness, temporary asymmetry, small palpable lumps in the first week or two. Less common: prolonged swelling, an infection, a cold sore triggered in someone who is prone to them (tell us — we can pre-treat), a nodule needing dissolving.

Rare but serious: vascular occlusion, where filler enters or compresses a blood vessel and cuts off blood supply to the tissue. It is the reason lip and facial filler should be done by someone with detailed anatomical knowledge, who recognises the warning signs (severe disproportionate pain, blanching, mottled skin) and who keeps hyaluronidase on site to reverse it immediately. This is not scaremongering — it is precisely why the person holding the needle should be medically qualified.

When we will say no

We will not treat you if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have an active infection or cold sore at the site, have a known allergy to hyaluronic acid or lidocaine, or have certain autoimmune or bleeding conditions without specialist clearance. We will also decline if you have had a permanent or semi-permanent filler elsewhere that we cannot safely work over, if you are unwell, or if what you are asking for would not look right on your face. A doctor who never says no is not being kind to you.

Dissolving previous filler

If you have had lip filler elsewhere and you are unhappy with it — migrated product above the lip border, a heavy top lip, lumps, or simply too much — hyaluronic acid can be dissolved. It is a straightforward treatment, though it needs a proper consultation first, a patch test, and a wait of two weeks or more before anything new is placed. Plenty of our patients come to us specifically to undo work rather than to add to it, and there is no judgement in that room.

How long it lasts, and what shortens it

Six to twelve months for most people. Lips are one of the fastest-metabolising areas of the face because they move constantly — talking, eating, expressing — and movement breaks filler down. Things that shorten your result: a fast metabolism, regular high-intensity exercise, smoking, significant sun exposure, and being younger. Things that extend it: a conservative amount well placed, good hydration, sun protection, and topping up before it has fully gone rather than starting from scratch each time.

How to choose who treats your lips

Lips are the highest-visibility, highest-regret area in aesthetics. Before you book anywhere, ask:

• Who will actually inject me — and what are their medical qualifications?
• Do you keep hyaluronidase on the premises, and have you used it?
• What product are you using, and why that one for my lips?
• Will you show me your own before-and-afters — not stock photos or the brand's marketing images?
• What is your policy if I am not happy at the two-week review?
• Is there a review appointment included?

A private clinic, not a salon floor

Lumina is deliberately small — a boutique, doctor-led clinic in a private, intimate setting. You are not treated in a room off a busy salon, and you will not sit in a waiting area with other people.
