Anti-wrinkle injections use a prescription medicine (botulinum toxin — you may know the best-known brand, Botox) to temporarily relax the small muscles that repeatedly crease the skin. When those muscles soften, the lines they create soften too. Because it is a prescription-only medicine in Ireland, treatment always begins with a medical consultation where our doctor assesses whether it's genuinely suitable for you.

Botox, anti wrinkle, wrinkle relaxers — what should I call it?

People search for this treatment in a dozen different ways: anti wrinkle Limerick, anti-wrinkle injections, wrinkle relaxers, muscle relaxing injections, or simply by the brand name Botox. Botox® is one manufacturer's trade name, and in Ireland a prescription-only medicine cannot be advertised to the public by brand. Your treatment, step by step

Knowing exactly what happens removes most of the nerves, so here is the whole appointment:

1. Consultation (10–15 minutes). We talk through what's bothering you, your medical history, any medications, and what you want to look like afterwards. Your face is assessed at rest and in movement — frowning, raising your brows, smiling.
2. An honest recommendation. You'll be told which areas would genuinely help, which wouldn't, and roughly what to expect. If treatment isn't appropriate, that's said clearly.
3. Consent and photographs. With your permission, before photos are taken for your own record and comparison.
4. Treatment (10–15 minutes). The skin is cleaned and a series of very small injections are placed precisely. No anaesthetic is normally needed — the needles are extremely fine.
5. Aftercare. You'll leave with clear instructions and a direct way to reach us if you have any questions.
6. Two-week review. This is where we check how your face has responded and top up if anything needs balancing. It's included, and it matters.

Preventative treatment — is it worth starting early?

This is one of the most common questions we get from patients in their late twenties and thirties. The reasoning behind starting early is sound: lines begin as dynamic lines that appear only when you move, then gradually become static lines etched into the skin at rest. Softening the movement before that happens can slow the process.

But it isn't right for everyone, and we won't pretend it is. If your lines still disappear completely at rest and don't bother you, there's a reasonable argument for waiting. Good skincare and daily SPF do more for most people in their twenties than injectables. We'd rather tell you to come back in two years than take your money now.

How long it lasts — and what affects it

Results usually begin appearing within 3 to 14 days and typically last 3 to 4 months. Several things influence that:

• Metabolism. People who exercise intensely often find results wear off a little faster
• Muscle strength. Strong, expressive muscles need more support
• Dose. Conservative dosing gives a softer, more natural result — which can mean slightly shorter duration. That's a trade-off we discuss openly
• How long you've been having treatment. Many long-term patients find they need less over time

Most settle into two or three treatments a year. Some come once, before a wedding or a significant event, and never return — that's entirely fine.

What happens if I stop?

Nothing bad. This is worth stating plainly because it's a genuine fear. Your muscles gradually return to their normal strength and your lines return to how they would have been. Nothing becomes worse than before, and there's no dependency. You are not committing to anything long-term by trying it once.

Who shouldn't have this treatment

Being honest about who we turn away is part of being a medical clinic. Treatment is not suitable if you:

• Are pregnant or breastfeeding
• Have a neuromuscular condition such as myasthenia gravis
• Have an active skin infection or inflammation in the area
• Have a known allergy to any component of the medicine
• Have had an unusual reaction to this treatment before

Certain medications and recent treatments also matter, which is exactly why the consultation includes a proper medical history rather than a quick form. If something in your history means we should wait or decline, we'll tell you and explain why.

Aftercare — the things that actually matter

Aftercare here is simple, and mostly for the first day:

• Stay upright for 4 hours — no lying flat or face-down
• No strenuous exercise for 24 hours
• Don't rub or massage the treated areas
• Avoid facials, saunas and sunbeds for 2 weeks
• Gentle exercising of the treated muscles on the first day is fine
• Normal make-up can go back on after a few hours

Side effects, honestly

Any medical treatment carries some risk, and you deserve to hear it before you decide rather than after. Common and short-lived: small red marks at injection points, mild bruising, occasional headache for a day or two. Less common: temporary asymmetry, which is usually correctable at the two-week review.

Rarely, a treated muscle relaxes more than intended and a brow or eyelid can feel heavy. This is temporary and resolves as the treatment wears off. Careful placement and conservative dosing make it considerably less likely — which is the main argument for who treats you mattering more than what product is used.

Combining with other treatments

Anti-wrinkle injections soften movement, but they do nothing for skin quality — tone, texture, dullness or fine crepiness. If your real concern is looking tired rather than lined, injectables alone may not be the answer.

Often the better plan pairs them with microneedling, polynucleotides or Profhilo. And sometimes we'll suggest starting with the skin treatment alone. If a smaller, cheaper plan will get you where you want to be, that's what we'll recommend.

How to choose who treats you

This is a prescription medicine being injected into your face, and standards across the industry vary enormously. Whoever you choose — us or anyone else — it's worth asking:

• Who is actually performing the treatment, and what is their medical qualification?
• Will my face be assessed individually, or is there a standard dose per area?
• Is a two-week review included?
• What happens, practically, if I'm not happy?
• Are you comfortable telling patients "no" or "less"?
